The Client: SIOFA
SIOFA is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the management of fisheries resources in the Southern Indian Ocean. Its mission is to coordinate various stakeholders involved in fishing activities in the Indian Ocean area and enforce the adopted management and conservation measures.
The Project
To ensure the sustainability and evolution of the system, NAES implemented a solution enabling regular data updates while allowing the integration of new features when needed. A continuous improvement plan was outlined, focusing on optimizing specific Drupal site modules.
A visual redesign of the SIOFA website was also suggested to enhance compatibility across mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
With this solution, SIOFA now benefits from a high-performance, intuitive, and scalable system that improves data visibility and accessibility for all stakeholders.
The Challenge
SIOFA's databases contain critical information related to fishing effort, catch data, and biological sampling. However, data accessibility and readability were limited, hindering their effective use by the CCPs and the SIOFA Secretariat.
The objective was therefore to make data easily accessible and usable through a user-friendly digital solution, allowing users to retrieve concise data summaries and submission status reports.
The Solution
As part of the implementation of an "Information System for Observing Anesthetic Flows" (SIOFA), NAES proposed a fast and cost-effective solution by leveraging SIOFA's existing website architecture based on Drupal, rather than developing a standalone application. This approach enabled the rapid integration of a dedicated section within the site.
The key actions carried out included:
- Creation of a meta-database to structure and centralize accessible information,
- Analysis of database gaps and recommendations for compliance improvements,
- Implementation of semi-automated import routines to update data without disrupting the existing calculation tools,
- Development of an intuitive interface allowing users to search, filter, and download data in various formats (Excel, CSV),
- Preservation of the existing user experience by maintaining the site's theme and delivery settings.
All these developments were designed to ensure a seamless transition and immediate adoption by users without requiring additional training.
Post-Project Support
To ensure the system's sustainability and scalability, NAES set up a mechanism for regular data updates and the integration of new features as needed. A continuous improvement plan was proposed, focusing on optimizing specific Drupal site modules.
A website redesign was also suggested to enhance compatibility across mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
With this solution, SIOFA now benefits from a high-performance, intuitive, and scalable system that significantly improves data visibility and accessibility for all stakeholders.
